UTA is proposing changes to service and fares in 2027. The public comment period for these changes is August 10–September 9. We welcome input and feedback to help shape how we support riders.
Service
Proposed Change: S-Line Extension
An extension to the S-Line streetcar service is currently under construction. Service is scheduled to open to the public in August 2027.
- To learn more about the project, visit the S-Line Extension project page.
- For information about service disruptions and construction activities that impact S-Line riders, visit rideuta.com/disruptions.
Reason
The project will add a new station at Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue, next to the Sugar House shopping district. This extension is a key investment in sustainable transportation for the Sugar House business district, bringing the streetcar closer to shops, restaurants, new housing, and the University of Utah Sugar House Health Center.
Fares
Proposed Change: Tap To Pay
UTA proposes allowing riders to tap to pay using credit or debit cards and mobile wallets. Currently, customers may tap to pay with FAREPAY Cards, student or Eco passes, and other electronic cards.
Reason
This change provides riders with a quick, intuitive payment option. Credit or debit cards, or their mobile wallet versions on a smartphone, would offer a simple, convenient way for casual and visiting riders to pay to ride UTA.
Proposed Change: Fare Rate Change $2.50 to $3
UTA is proposing to increase baseline fares from $2.50 to $3 to help pay for the increasing operational costs and revenue needed for transit services.
Reason
UTA’s costs to operate, maintain, and expand public transportation have risen significantly since baseline fare was set at $2.50 in 2013.
